Home Buying Questions to Consider

Before beginning the home buying process, it’s important to ask yourself a number of questions to narrow down your search. These include:
  1. What can you afford? Be sure to get pre-qualified for a mortgage before you start looking.
  2. Where do you want to live? Do you want to be close to your neighbors or far away? Do you want to do a lot of walking or do you prefer to drive? What neighborhood characteristics do you require? What population, educational and community features are important to you?
  3. What home layout do you want? You’ll want to have an idea of the square footage, number of bedrooms and baths you require.
  4. How do you want to look for your home? Will you be trying to complete your search over a short amount of time or will you space it out over several weeks or months?
  5. What age home do you want? For example, are you only interested in a home that’s less than ten years old? And how important is the age of the home to you?
  6. How long do you plan to live in the home? This will help influence the features in your home, as well as the type of mortgage you obtain. For example, if you only will be in the home for a short time, you may want to consider an adjustable rate mortgage.
  7. What professionals will you engage in the process of buying real estate? Who will be your attorney, REALTOR, home inspector, lender and insurance provider?
