About Mountain Island Lake
Mountain Island Lake was created when a dam was installed on the Catawba River in 1924. The hydroelectric dam provides electricity for homes and businesses in the surrounding area. Mountain Island Lake itself also provides drinking water for neighboring areas such as Charlotte and parts of Gaston County.
Mountain Island Lake is on the smaller side among Charlotte-area lakes. It's about one tenth the size of Lake Norman, with 2,788 acres of surface water.
There are three public boat ramps on the lake, several kayak/paddleboard put-ins and lots of nature to explore. Historic Latta Plantation consumes a good section of shoreline and offers visitors access to the lake. While there are no public swimming beaches there are plenty of places to picnic, fish and hang out along the shore.
On this beautiful lake, you can enjoy kayaking, boating, waterskiing, swimming and much more. The lake offers three public boat ramps, while many homes have their own private docks. You won't find any restaurants, marinas or commercial building along the lake. The lake itself is 14 miles long and has approximately 61 miles of shoreline.
The area also is home Latta Plantation Nature Preserve, a 1,150-acre park which is worth exploring. This plantation was originally built in 1800 and is a popular destination for Charlotte-area residents interested in local history.
