Development in the Steele Creek Area

Steele Creek refers to a portion of southwest Mecklenburg County near Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Lake Wylie. Settlers began moving to this area before the Revolutionary War and a couple of the original signers of the Mecklenburg County Declaration of Independence lived here when that document was signed in 1775.

The Steele Creek area remained largely rural until recent years. But for the fast couple of decades, Steele Creek has been one of North Carolina's fastest growing areas. Some of the popular neighborhoods you'll find here include The Palisades, Regency at the Palisades, Berewick, North Reach, Ridgewater and Chateau. Many of the houses in this area are served by either Olympic High School or Palisades High School. And in this area, you can also find waterfront homes along Lake Wylie.

One of the main reasons that development grew in the Steele Creek area (starting in the 2000s) was infrastructure improvements. The Buster Boyd Bridge was replaced and Highway NC 49 was widened - allowing for improved traffic flow to the area. Then Highway 485 was built - providing for much easier access to and from Steele Creek and other parts of the Charlotte metro area. As a result of these and other improvements, the Steele Creek area has seen a boom in both commercial and residential development in the years since.
